As summer starts to wrap up you can either put away all your garden tools and call it a season or you can embrace a new season with fresh new plant combinations. In our fall collection we like to offer plants that can tolerate cooler weather as we transition from the hot days of summer to the cooler nights of fall. When you are putting together your new fall container gardens here are some flirty plants to consider this year.

  1. Ornamental Kale

Flirty Factor: Ornamental Kale offers wonderful foliage with leaves that are curly, frilly, or ruffled. As you can see some are more ruffled then other. When looking even closer at their leaves you will find deep veins of white or purple, depending on the variety you choose.

Container Garden Placement: It can be used as a filler or spiller. The ornamental kale is a great filler when planted near the edge of the container. When planted at a slight tilt over the edge of the container it can be used as a spiller. Even though it will not trail over like most spillers it will continue to fill out and occupy space.

Flirty Factor: The Zinnia is a show stopper this time of the year. With its continual blooms of pink, yellow, orange, or red flowers they help brighten up our transition of old summer blooms to warm fall colors.

Container Garden Placement: It can be used as a filler. The Zinnia, because of its volume and its mass quantity of flowers, works great as a filler. Its long, full leaves that come to a point creates lush foliage filling out any container. The blooms create medium height.

Flirty Factor: The Calendula, or pot marigold, is a cute, tiny plant that offers bright orange or sunny yellow flowers. As the bud starts to open, long spidery flower petals begin to unfold to create small daisy-like flowers.

Container Garden Placement: It can be used as a filler. The Calendula is a great size to create volume within the midsection of a container garden. It’s slender leaves blend together, while multiple shoots of tiny buds blanket with color.

Flirty Factor: The Ornamental Millet’s foliage is fun and whimsical. As the plant matures you will start to see the growth of tall dark plumes that produce seeds. The dark leaf variety is great when paired with reds, purples, and pinks. The lime green variety is great when paired with oranges, yellows, and other lime green plants.

Container Garden Placement: It can be used as a thriller. The Ornamental Millet provides height with tall leafy foliage. As it continues to grow large more and more plumes will develop, so it is best to place at the back of the container.
