Cyclamen
toxic to pets when ingested
This Southern Europe and Turkey native offers beautiful, shooting star flowers that make lovely blooming accent plants for indoors. Fall and Winter are when they bloom the strongest, but you will find blooming Cyclamen throughout the year for gifting.
Light: Bright, indirect sunlight, including 1-2 hours of direct sunlight during the Winter.
Temperature: Cool year-round. Between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Can tolerate as lo as 40 degrees.
Water: Always Keep slightly moist. Provide water by placing pot in a shallow container of tepid water for 15 to 30 minutes. When watering from the top, avoid getting water in the plant’s crown.
Nutrients: Feed 1 or 2 times a month. Mixed at half strength use a phosphorous high plant food.
Soil: Any good potting soil is fine. If you plan to keep a purchased plant for another year, promptly shift it to a slightly larger pot to provide room for growing roots.
Repotting: This plant can be kept in its original container for gifting. For longevity transplant to just a slightly larger container.
Happy Planting: From the center of the plant, long stems shoot up displaying a richly colored bloom with backswept petals creating the look of a shooting star. With proper care this plant will continue to send up new shoots for about 2 months. These blooms are surrounded by patterned, green foliage in the shape of a heart.
Troubleshooting:
Leaves and flower stems collapse: Dry soil. Be sure to replenish with enough water. If the plant will be unattended for a few days, remove from sunlight.
Leaves turn yellow and shrivel: Accelerated aging caused by warm temperatures. Move plant to a place where it can remain cool at night. Pinch off yellowing leaves.
