Portulaca

The Portulaca is desired for bright, happy flowers and ease of care. Great for beginners, small spaces, or forgetful waterers. Provide lots of sun and heat for maximum flowers throughout the summer. With a trailing habit this plant excels in hanging baskets, patio pots, and ground beds.

Light: Full sun. Provide at least 5-6 hours of sunlight. Portulaca are like succulents loving lots of heat for bloom production.

Temperature: Grown best in average to high summer temperatures. They thrive in high heat areas. Cover, shelter, or bring inside when temperatures dip below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Water: Water evenly throughout the summer. The Portulaca is drought tolerant and should fair without water for a couple days. This plant will rot out in soggy soil conditions.

Nutrients: Can be fed every other week with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Once plant is established, about midsummer, switch to a slow-release fertilizer. Follow the directions on the label.

Soil: Use a potting mix designed for containers that is well-draining. Avoid heavy mixes with compost. Always select a container with drainage.

Container Design: It’s trailing habit makes the Portulaca a popular filler/spiller plant that excels in hanging baskets, patio pots, or ground beds reaching about 2-8” tall and wide. They can be planted alone or with other sun-loving annuals.

Deadheading: No deadheading required. They are self-cleaning plants. Their blooms will naturally fall off when ready.

Happy Planting: The Portulaca offers bright happy flower colors in orange, pink, fuchsia, or yellow. They are easy plants to care for making them great for beginners. This plant loves to be planted in full sun and won’t mind a bit of neglect.
