Canna Lily

The Canna Lily is a flowering bulb that we grow as an annual. Because it is a bulb it can be planted each spring after the threat of the last frost, dug up in the fall, and replanted each spring for many years. To over winter, simply cut back foliage leaving a few inches of green, dig up, and cover with peat moss in a cool, dark area inside, typically a basement. Flowering in orange, red, or yellow with green or bronze foliage, this tropical plant enjoys full sun and moderately wet condition, but is tolerable to all soil types. This tropical plant is great for beginners because it is easy to care for. The only downside to this plant is they can attract Japanese Beetles.

Light: Plant in full sun providing at least 6 hours or more of sunlight. Canna Lilies excel in sunny, hot climates.

Water: Water this plant regularly and thoroughly keeping soils moist. Canna Lilies thrive in wet conditions. Supply adequate amounts of water for best results.

Planting: Select a container that is 13” or larger for maximum growth. Canna Lilies can grow between 2-3 feet depending on container size. These plants can get 5-6 feet when planted in the ground. Always use a container with drainage and use a well-draining potting mix.

Deadheading: Deadheading this plant is personal preference. If you do not deadhead the plant will spend some energy producing seeds. This energy could be put to producing new flowers. If you don’t need the seeds, then you most certainly can cut them off.
