Hibiscus
non-toxic to pets
The Hibiscus is a tropical plant loved and desired for its large, showy flower that bloom in a variety of colors and glossy green foliage. Loving full sun and attracting butterflies, this plant is the perfect addition to your deck or patio. Extend this plants life by bringing it inside during the winter months and saving it for the following year.
Light: Full sun. Provide at least 6 hours of sunlight for maximum blooms.
Temperature: Enjoys average summer temperatures. Prefers a warm sunny environment. Cover, shelter, or bring indoors when temperatures dip below 60 degrees F. Tolerates lower temps, but just to be on the safe side, bring indoors as soon as possible.
Bringing Indoors?: To ensure that pests do not hitch a ride inside you may use Insecticidal Soap or give it a rinse in the shower with soapy water.
Water: Water this plant thoroughly throughout the summer. Allow water to soak deep into the container where the roots reside. Lack of water can result in blooms falling off and foliage wilting.
Nutrients: Feed your Hibiscus small amounts regularly rather than large amounts once a month. Best to fertilize every time you water at a reduced amount that is recommended on label.
Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix. Regular potting mix is great. Always select a container with drainage.
Container Design: The Hibiscus is ideal outdoors in patio pots or landscape beds. They continue to bloom throughout the summer and can be over wintered during the winter, cared for, and placed back outside in the springtime. This plant can be used as a statement plant in the center of a large container growing to about 4 feet tall and wide. Pair with other sun-loving annuals.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not necessary, but as blooms fade and lose their color, pick off to keep the plant looking neat.
Happy Planting: This plant offers large, broad petals opening in shades of red, yellow, pink, or orange. They also attract wildlife like butterflies to your garden. If you have a south facing patio or deck, this plant will excel.
