Garden Mum
Mums or chrysanthemums can be grown as annuals, perennials, or seasonal houseplants depending on the variety. Typically we will carry perennial mums in the spring time to be planted in the ground and grown so flowers can be enjoyed late summer through fall. Each spring we grow seasonal mums for spring color and Easter. During late summer and fall we grow mums in a variety of sizes and colors to be enjoyed during autumn. No matter what type of mum you purchase they all only bloom once and then are done for the remainder of the season. In the spring time pastel colors are chosen like yellow, pink, purple, and white. In the fall time warm autumn colors are chosen like orange, red, yellow, and purple. Garden mums are a great way to add rich, masses of flowers that brighten a garden, patio, or balcony.
Light: Plant in full to part sun. The more light and heat exposure the faster they will open.
Water: Water regularly typically everyday to every other day. This plant will droop when dry to indicate it needs water. If this happens provide some water, but do not drown the plant. To maintain a sturdy plant water underneath the blooms and foliage so water doesn’t weigh them down.
Planting: Annual and perennial mums are great for borders and walkways when planted in masses. Annual Garden Mums can also be grown in patio pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. When provided the proper care Garden Mums can be enjoyed indoors as gifts or in seasonal table arrangements.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not required. Once the blooms on an annual Garden Mum are spent and fade to brown discard the plant. It will not rebloom. Perennial Garden Mums will go dormant during the winter and new growth will become visible in the spring.
