Calla Lily

toxic to pets when ingested

The Calla Lily, which is native to South Africa, is popular for brightly colored, cupped-shaped blooms offered in many different colors. They are often enjoyed in the spring and summer months, but can be purchased throughout the year. These bulbs have long-lasting flowers and can be brought to rebloom with a period of rest.

Light: Provide at least 6 hours or more of bright, indirect light.

Temperature: Average room temperature or a bit cooler is preferred in the spring with slightly warmer temperatures in the summer. Keep between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Water: In spring, summer, and when plant is flowering keep soil slightly moist. Reduce water in late summer and allow plant to almost completely dry out when in dormancy.

Nutrients: Feed every 3 weeks with a high-phosphorous plant food while plant is actively growing and flowering.

Soil: Any good potting soil is great. Choose a mix that will drain well.

Repotting: Repot newly purchasesdplants into a pot one-size larger. Try not to disturb the root system as much as possible.

Deadheading: Clip off the stems of faded flowers and enjoy lush foliage for a few months.

Reblooming: Allow the plant to go into dormancy for a rest period. To do this allow soil to dry out until plant foliage withers, cut off foliage, and keep the plant in a cool, shady area with the soil slightly moist. Transplant mid-winter, and place in an area that will provide warmth and light to bring them back to life.
