Ornamental Kale
Ornamental Kale, also known as Flowering Kale, is an annual commonly grown during the fall season for its color changing foliage. Kale is one of those plants that increases in color as the weather becomes cooler. The center/veined color becomes more defined, either white or purple. This plant alongside the Garden Mum performs the best in cool weather and well into the first couple of frosts. Ornamental Kale is truly ornamental. It is grown for its color changing property and not so much for its taste for salads. We like to pair Kale with other plants from our Fall Collection like Zinnia, Celosia, Garden Mums, and Lemon Coral Sedum.
Light: Plant in full sun to shade, providing about 5-6 hours of sunlight. This plant can tolerant shade.
Water: Water regularly, keeping soil slightly moist between watering. This plant will droop if underwatered. Provide a bit of water to help bounce back, but do not drown with water. Water under the foliage to minimize excess moisture build up between the leaf layers.
Planting: Ornamental Kale is great for fall arrangements in patio pots, hanging baskets, or window boxes. They can also be added to ground beds providing fall color well into the first frost. Plant at an angle along the edge of a container to best show off this leafy plant.
Deadheading: No deadheading needed. As plant continues to grow, we recommend cleaning brown/dead foliage at the base of the plant near foliage. This will help keep the soil clean and plant looking neat.
